Question 7: History and Culture
Which one of the following is not a Harappan site?
aChanhudaro
bKot Diji
cSohgaura
dDesalpur
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).
Sohgaura, in Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh, is known for a Mauryan-period copper plate inscription in Brahmi that records the setting up of storehouses for famine relief. It is not a Harappan site. Chanhudaro in Sindh was a craft centre known for bead making, Kot Diji in Sindh has early and pre-Harappan levels, and Desalpur in Kutch, Gujarat, is a Harappan site. Remember Sohgaura as Mauryan, not Harappan.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Chanhudaro in Sindh is a Harappan craft centre.
- (b) Kot Diji in Sindh is a Harappan and pre-Harappan site.
- (c) Correct: Sohgaura is known for a Mauryan-period copper plate, not for a Harappan settlement.
- (d) Desalpur in Kutch is a Harappan site.
