- 2.As per the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006, bamboo is a minor forest produce.
- 3.The Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006 allows ownership of minor forest produce to forest dwellers.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).
Statements 2 and 3 are correct. The Forest Rights Act, 2006 treats bamboo as minor forest produce and recognises the right of forest dwellers to own, collect, use and dispose of minor forest produce. The 2017 amendment to the Indian Forest Act took bamboo grown on non-forest land out of the definition of a tree, so no felling or transit permit is needed there; it did not give forest dwellers a right to fell bamboo growing in forest areas.
- 1. The 2017 amendment concerns bamboo on non-forest land, not a right to fell it in forests.
- 2. The Forest Rights Act treats bamboo as minor forest produce.
- 3. The Act recognises ownership of minor forest produce by forest dwellers.
