UPSC Prelims 2019 · GS Paper I
Question 51: Economy and Social Development
Consider the following statements about Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) in India :
- 1.PVTGs reside in 18 States and one Union Territory.
- 2.A stagnant or declining population is one of the criteria for determining PVTG status.
- 3.There are 95 PVTGs officially notified in the country so far.
- 4.Irular and Konda Reddi tribes are included in the list of PVTGs.
Which of the statements given above are correct?
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).
Statements 1, 2 and 4 are correct. Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups live in 18 states and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which is the one Union Territory. The criteria include a pre-agricultural level of technology, very low literacy, a stagnant or declining population and a subsistence economy. The number of notified PVTGs is 75, not 95, so statement 3 is false. The Irular of Tamil Nadu and the Konda Reddi of Andhra Pradesh are among the listed groups.
- 1. PVTGs live in 18 states and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
- 2. A stagnant or declining population is a criterion.
- 3. There are 75 notified PVTGs, not 95.
- 4. Irular and Konda Reddi are in the PVTG list.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 3 is not correct, (a), (b) and (d) go: each of them includes 3.
What you needed to know: There are 75 notified PVTGs, not 95.
Only (c) is left. You didn’t need statements 1, 2 or 4.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong: statement 3 is false, as the number is 75.
- (b) Wrong: it includes statement 3 and leaves out statement 1.
- (c) Correct: statements 1, 2 and 4 hold.
- (d) Wrong: statement 3 is false and statement 2 is left out.
