Question 5: History and Culture

With reference to Swadeshi Movement, consider the following statements :

  1. 1.It contributed to the revival of the indigenous artisan crafts and industries.
  2. 2.The National Council of Education was established as a part of Swadeshi Movement.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

a1 only
b2 only
cBoth 1 and 2
dNeither 1 nor 2

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).

The Swadeshi Movement, which began in 1905 against the partition of Bengal, revived indigenous crafts and industries: boycott of foreign goods created demand for Indian cloth, soap, matches and similar products, and swadeshi enterprises sprang up. It also had an educational side, and the National Council of Education was set up in 1906 as part of the movement, along with the Bengal National College. Both statements are therefore correct. Remember the trio of boycott, swadeshi and national education.

  • 1. Boycott of foreign goods revived indigenous crafts and industries.
  • 2. The National Council of Education was founded in 1906 as part of Swadeshi.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (b) and (d) go: each of them leaves 1 out.

What you needed to know: Boycott of foreign goods revived indigenous crafts and industries.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (a) goes: it leaves 2 out.

What you needed to know: The National Council of Education was founded in 1906 as part of Swadeshi.

Only (c) is left. This one needs every statement.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Statement 2 is also correct, so 1 alone is incomplete.
  • (b) Statement 1 is also correct, so 2 alone is incomplete.
  • (c) Correct: both the revival of indigenous industry and the National Council of Education belong to Swadeshi.
  • (d) Both statements are correct, so 'neither' fails.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
