Question 47: Polity and Governance

The Ninth Schedule was introduced in the Constitution of India during the prime ministership of

aJawaharlal Nehru
bLal Bahadur Shastri
cIndira Gandhi
dMorarji Desai

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).

The Ninth Schedule was added by the First Amendment Act, 1951, when Jawaharlal Nehru was Prime Minister. It was meant to protect land reform and zamindari abolition laws from judicial challenge. Since the I. R. Coelho case (2007), laws placed in it after 24 April 1973 can be reviewed by the courts if they damage the basic structure.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Correct: the Ninth Schedule came with the First Amendment in 1951 under Nehru.
  • (b) Shastri was Prime Minister from 1964 to 1966.
  • (c) Indira Gandhi's period saw other amendments, not the Ninth Schedule's introduction.
  • (d) Morarji Desai was Prime Minister from 1977 to 1979.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
