AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).

Carbofuran, methyl parathion, phorate and triazophos are highly toxic organophosphate and carbamate pesticides used in agriculture. They are viewed with apprehension because of risks to human health, birds and aquatic life, and several of them have been restricted or proposed for a ban in India. They are not food preservatives, fruit-ripening agents or moisturisers for cosmetics.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Correct: they are pesticides used in agriculture.
  • (b) They are not food preservatives.
  • (c) Fruit ripening agents include calcium carbide and ethylene sources, not these.
  • (d) They are not cosmetic ingredients.
