Question 29: Environment and Ecology
Consider the following pairs :
| Wildlife | Naturally found in | |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Blue-finned Mahseer | Cauvery River |
| 2 | Irrawaddy Dolphin | Chambal River |
| 3 | Rusty-spotted Cat | Eastern Ghats |
Which of the pairs given above are correctly matched?
a1 and 2 only
b2 and 3 only
c1 and 3 only
d1, 2 and 3
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).
Pairs 1 and 3 are correct. The blue-finned mahseer is a fish of the Cauvery river system, and the rusty-spotted cat is found in India and Sri Lanka, including in the Eastern Ghats. The Irrawaddy dolphin lives in Chilika lake, the Bay of Bengal coast and rivers of South-east Asia, not the Chambal, where the protected river dolphin is the Ganges river dolphin along with the gharial.
- 1. The blue-finned mahseer is found in the Cauvery.
- 2. The Irrawaddy dolphin is found in Chilika, not the Chambal.
- 3. The rusty-spotted cat occurs in the Eastern Ghats.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong: the Irrawaddy dolphin is not naturally found in the Chambal.
- (b) Wrong: it includes pair 2 and leaves out pair 1.
- (c) Correct: pairs 1 and 3 are rightly matched.
- (d) Wrong: pair 2 is incorrect.
