Question 20: Geography

On 21st June, the Sun

adoes not set below the horizon at the Arctic Circle
bdoes not set below the horizon at Antarctic Circle
cshines vertically overhead at noon on the Equator
dshines vertically overhead at the Tropic of Capricorn

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).

On 21 June, the summer solstice of the northern hemisphere, the Sun is vertically overhead at the Tropic of Cancer. Around the Arctic Circle the Sun stays up for 24 hours and does not dip below the horizon, while around the Antarctic Circle it does not rise. The Equator gets overhead noon Sun at the equinoxes, in March and September, and the Tropic of Capricorn gets it on 22 December.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Correct: at the Arctic Circle the Sun does not set below the horizon on 21 June.
  • (b) At the Antarctic Circle the Sun does not rise on this date.
  • (c) The Equator gets overhead noon Sun at the equinoxes, not on 21 June.
  • (d) The Sun is overhead at the Tropic of Capricorn on 22 December.
