Question 100: Science and Technology
Which one of the following statements is not correct?
aHepatitis B virus is transmitted much like HIV.
bHepatitis B, unlike Hepatitis C, does not have a vaccine.
cGlobally, the number of people infected with Hepatitis B and C viruses are several times more than those infected with HIV.
dSome of those infected with Hepatitis B and C viruses do not show the symptoms for many years.
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).
Option (b) is not correct, so it is the answer. There is a vaccine against Hepatitis B, given in the childhood immunisation schedule, while Hepatitis C has no vaccine. Hepatitis B spreads like HIV, through blood, sexual contact and from mother to child. Hepatitis B and C infect far more people worldwide than HIV, and many carriers show no symptoms for years.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) True: Hepatitis B spreads like HIV, through blood and body fluids.
- (b) Correct: Hepatitis B has a vaccine, while Hepatitis C does not, so the statement is reversed.
- (c) True: far more people live with Hepatitis B and C than with HIV.
- (d) True: infection can stay silent for years.
