Question 80: History and Culture

Which among the following events happened earliest ?

aSwami Dayanand established Arya Samaj.
bDinabandhu Mitra wrote Neeldarpan.
cBankim Chandra Chattopadhyay wrote Anandmath.
dSatyendranath Tagore became the first Indian to succeed in the Indian Civil Services Examination.

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).

Dinabandhu Mitra wrote Neeldarpan in 1860, a play about the oppression of indigo cultivators. Satyendranath Tagore became the first Indian to qualify for the ICS in 1863, Swami Dayanand founded the Arya Samaj in 1875, and Bankim Chandra wrote Anandmath in 1882. Neeldarpan is therefore the earliest of the four events.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) The Arya Samaj was founded in 1875, after Neeldarpan.
  • (b) Right: Neeldarpan, 1860, is the earliest.
  • (c) Anandmath came in 1882.
  • (d) Satyendranath Tagore passed the ICS in 1863.
