Question 18: International Relations and Current Affairs
Very recently, in which of the following countries have lakhs of people either suffered from severe famine/acute malnutrition or died due to starvation caused by war/ethnic conflicts ?
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).
Yemen and South Sudan are the two countries in the list where war and ethnic or political conflict drove severe famine and acute malnutrition around 2017-18. In Yemen, the civil war and the blockade left millions facing hunger; in South Sudan, famine was declared in parts of the country in February 2017 during its civil war. The other countries named were not facing war-driven famine on this scale at the time.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Angola and Zambia did not face war-driven famine at this time.
- (b) Morocco and Tunisia were not in a war-driven food emergency.
- (c) Venezuela had an economic crisis and Colombia a long conflict, but not famine of this kind.
- (d) Right: civil war caused severe famine and malnutrition in Yemen and South Sudan.
