Question 51: Reading Comprehension

Which one of the following is the most important implication of the passage?
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).
The passage says scientific knowledge has dangers, like every great thing, but it opens up, as nothing else can, the vision of a possible happy world without poverty, war or much illness, and that science by its nature frees people. The implication is that a happy world is science's dream or vision. Option (b) calls science the only threat, which is not said, and (c) turns the vision into a necessary condition, which the passage does not state.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Correct: science opens up the vision of a happy world.
- (b) Science is not called the only threat; its dangers are compared with those of any great thing.
- (c) Claims necessity; the passage speaks of science opening a vision, not of what is impossible without it.
- (d) Contradicts the passage, which calls the happy world possible.
Worth knowing: Option (c) is also defensible, since the passage says science opens this vision as nothing else can; UPSC's key chooses (a).
Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
