Question 30: Reading Comprehension

Passage—2 · as printed by UPSC
Passage beginning “A diversity of natural assets will…”

With reference to the above passage, which of the following would assist us in coping with the climate change?

  1. 1.Conservation of natural water sources
  2. 2.Conservation of wider gene pool
  3. 3.Existing crop management practices
  4. 4.Migration corridors

Select the correct answer using the code given below.

a1, 2 and 3 only
b1, 2 and 4 only
c3 and 4 only
d1, 2, 3 and 4

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).

The passage says relatively intact ecosystems such as forested catchments and wetlands buffer climate impacts, so conserving natural water sources helps (1). It calls for a wider pool of genetic resources of crops, breeds and wild relatives (2). It wants natural areas linked by migration corridors so species can move (4). But it criticises current choice of crops suited to past or present conditions, so existing crop practices will not help (3). Answer: 1, 2 and 4.

  • 1. Forested catchments and wetlands buffer climate impacts.
  • 2. A wider pool of crop and breed genetic resources is needed.
  • 3. Existing practices favour crops suited to past conditions, so they do not help.
  • 4. Corridors let species move as the climate changes.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 3 is not correct, (a), (c) and (d) go: each of them includes 3.

What you needed to know: Existing practices favour crops suited to past conditions, so they do not help.

Only (b) is left. You didn’t need statements 1, 2 or 4.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Includes existing crop practices, which the passage criticises.
  • (b) Correct: water sources, wider gene pool and migration corridors help.
  • (c) Includes existing crop practices and leaves out gene pool and water sources.
  • (d) Includes existing crop practices, which the passage faults.
