UPSC Prelims 2017 · GS Paper I
Question 65: Environment and Ecology
Consider the following statements :
- 1.Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) to Reduce Short Lived Climate Pollutants is a unique initiative of G20 group of countries.
- 2.The CCAC focuses on methane, black carbon and hydrofluorocarbons.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct ?
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).
The Climate and Clean Air Coalition to Reduce Short-Lived Climate Pollutants was launched in 2012 by a group of countries (the United States, Canada, Sweden, Mexico, Ghana and Bangladesh) together with UNEP, and it is not an initiative of the G20, so Statement 1 is wrong. It focuses on short-lived pollutants including methane, black carbon and hydrofluorocarbons, so Statement 2 is right. Remember: CCAC targets methane, black carbon and HFCs.
- 1. It was launched by a few countries with UNEP in 2012, not by the G20.
- 2. It targets methane, black carbon and HFCs.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a) and (c) go: each of them includes 1.
What you needed to know: It was launched by a few countries with UNEP in 2012, not by the G20.
- Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (d) goes: it leaves 2 out.
What you needed to know: It targets methane, black carbon and HFCs.
Only (b) is left. This one needs every statement.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong: it was not launched by the G20.
- (b) Right: only Statement 2, on methane, black carbon and HFCs, is correct.
- (c) Wrong: statement 1 is false.
- (d) Wrong: statement 2 is correct.
