UPSC Prelims 2017 · GS Paper I
Question 57: Polity and Governance
For election to the Lok Sabha, a nomination paper can be filed by
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).
A Lok Sabha candidate must be a citizen of India aged at least 25 and, under the Representation of the People Act, 1951, must be registered as an elector in some parliamentary constituency in India. He need not reside in the constituency he contests. So a nomination can be filed by any citizen whose name appears in the electoral roll of a constituency. Mere residence in India is not enough, and being a citizen alone is not enough either.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong: residence is not enough; a candidate must be a citizen on the electoral roll.
- (b) Wrong: there is no need to live in the constituency being contested.
- (c) Right: a citizen enrolled as a voter in any constituency can file a nomination.
- (d) Wrong: citizenship alone is insufficient; one must be on the electoral roll.
