UPSC Prelims 2017 · GS Paper I
Question 30: Geography
With reference to river Teesta, consider the following statements :
- 1.The source of river Teesta is the same as that of Brahmaputra but it flows through Sikkim.
- 2.River Rangeet originates in Sikkim and it is a tributary of river Teesta.
- 3.River Teesta flows into Bay of Bengal on the border of India and Bangladesh.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct ?
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).
The Teesta rises in the Sikkim Himalaya (north Sikkim), whereas the Brahmaputra rises in Tibet, so Statement 1 is wrong. The Rangeet rises in Sikkim and joins the Teesta as a tributary, so Statement 2 is right. The Teesta does not flow into the Bay of Bengal itself: after crossing into Bangladesh it joins the Brahmaputra (Jamuna), which then meets the Ganga, so Statement 3 is wrong. Remember: Teesta is a Brahmaputra tributary, and Rangeet is a Teesta tributary.
- 1. The Teesta rises in Sikkim; the Brahmaputra rises in Tibet.
- 2. The Rangeet originates in Sikkim and is a tributary of the Teesta.
- 3. In Bangladesh the Teesta joins the Brahmaputra (Jamuna), not the Bay of Bengal directly.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 3 is not correct, (a), (c) and (d) go: each of them includes 3.
What you needed to know: In Bangladesh the Teesta joins the Brahmaputra (Jamuna), not the Bay of Bengal directly.
Only (b) is left. You didn’t need statements 1 or 2.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong: statements 1 and 3 are both false.
- (b) Right: only Statement 2, about the Rangeet, is correct.
- (c) Wrong: statement 3 is false; the Teesta joins the Brahmaputra, not the sea.
- (d) Wrong: statements 1 and 3 are false.
