UPSC Prelims 2017 · GS Paper I
Question 28: International Relations and Current Affairs
Consider the following statements :
- 1.The Nuclear Security Summits are periodically held under the aegis of the United Nations.
- 2.The International Panel on Fissile Materials is an organ of International Atomic Energy Agency.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct ?
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).
The Nuclear Security Summits were leaders' meetings begun by US President Barack Obama in Washington in 2010 (Seoul 2012, The Hague 2014, Washington 2016). They were not held under the United Nations, so Statement 1 is wrong. The International Panel on Fissile Materials is an independent group of arms-control and nuclear experts from several countries, based at Princeton, and not an organ of the IAEA, so Statement 2 is wrong too. Remember: both are outside the UN system.
- 1. The summits were an initiative of the US President, not a UN process.
- 2. The IPFM is an independent group of experts, not an IAEA organ.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a) and (c) go: each of them includes 1.
What you needed to know: The summits were an initiative of the US President, not a UN process.
- Then, if you were sure statement 2 is not correct, (b) goes: it includes 2.
What you needed to know: The IPFM is an independent group of experts, not an IAEA organ.
Only (d) is left. This one needs every statement.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong: the summits were not held under UN aegis.
- (b) Wrong: the Panel is an independent expert group, not an IAEA organ.
- (c) Wrong: both statements are false.
- (d) Right: neither statement is correct.
