Question 15: History and Culture
The Trade Disputes Act of 1929 provided for
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).
The Trade Disputes Act of 1929 set up courts of inquiry and conciliation boards to deal with industrial disputes, and it restricted strikes: strikes in public utility services needed prior notice, and strikes meant to coerce the government or hurt the community were made illegal. That is a system of tribunals and a ban on strikes. It did not provide for workers' participation in management, and it did not give management arbitrary powers or bring in British courts to settle disputes. Remember: 1929 Act favoured compulsory settlement and curbed strikes.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong: workers' participation in management came much later.
- (b) Wrong: the Act did not give management arbitrary powers.
- (c) Wrong: disputes went to inquiry courts and boards under the Act, not to British courts.
- (d) Right: it created machinery for settling disputes and restricted strikes.
