Question 46: Reading Comprehension

Passage—6 · as printed by UPSC
Passage beginning “Climate change is likely to expose a…”Passage beginning “Climate change is likely to expose a…”

Which of the following is the most rational inference from the above passage?

aThe world will not be able to cope with large-scale migration of climate refugees.
bWe must find the ways and means to stop further climate change.
cClimate change will be the most important reason for the migration of people in the future.
dRelation between climate change and migration is not yet properly understood.

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).

The passage notes that climate migrants lack an agreed definition or status, that there are still gaps in understanding how climate change will act as a root cause of migration, and that internal migration deserves recognition. Its fair inference is that the link between climate change and migration is not yet properly understood. Options predicting that the world cannot cope, calling for an end to climate change, or naming climate change the top future cause go beyond the passage.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) No prediction about failing to cope is made; the passage only asks who will provide protection.
  • (b) No policy to stop climate change is argued.
  • (c) The passage says climate change may force migration but does not rank it as the most important reason.
  • (d) Correct: the passage points to gaps in understanding and no consensus on definition or status.
