Question 25: Reading Comprehension

Passage—5 · as printed by UPSC
Passage beginning “In a free country, the man who…”

The passage seems to suggest that

aa leader foresees his future position
ba leader is chosen only by a free country
ca leader must see that his country is free from despair
ddespair in a country sometimes leads to dictatorship

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).

The passage says that in a free country the leader is usually of outstanding character, and early signs make his rise foreseeable. For dictators this is not always true: they often reach power by chance or because of the country's unhappy condition. So despair in a country can sometimes lead to dictatorship. The other options misplace who foresees, where leaders are chosen, or what a leader must do, none of which is stated.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Others can foresee a leader's rise from his early qualities; the passage does not say the leader foresees his own position.
  • (b) Free countries usually produce able leaders, but the passage does not say leaders are chosen only there.
  • (c) What a leader must do for his country is not discussed.
  • (d) Correct: dictators often come to power through chance or the unhappy state of their country.
