Question 17: Reading Comprehension

“Rights are certain advantageous conditions of social well-being indispensable to the true development of the citizen.” In the light of this statement, which one of the following is the correct understanding of rights?

aRights aim at individual good only.
bRights aim at social good only.
cRights aim at both individual and social good.
dRights aim at individual good devoid of social well-being.

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).

The definition says rights are conditions of social well-being that a citizen needs for true development. They therefore serve the individual's growth and society's welfare together: the individual good and the social good are linked, not opposed. Options built on only or devoid of drop one side, so they contradict the definition. Read the definition for both of its halves before choosing.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Individual good only ignores the social well-being the definition names.
  • (b) Social good only ignores the citizen's development, which the definition names.
  • (c) Correct: rights are social conditions needed for the citizen's development, so both goods are served.
  • (d) Says rights ignore social well-being, the opposite of the definition.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
