The plan of Sir Stafford Cripps envisaged that after the Second World War

aIndia should be granted complete independence
bIndia should be partitioned into two before granting independence
cIndia should be made a republic with the condition that she will join the Commonwealth
dIndia should be given Dominion status

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).

The Cripps Mission of 1942 offered Dominion status for India after the Second World War, with a constituent assembly to frame the new constitution and a right for any province to stay out of the Union. India would be free to leave the Commonwealth. It did not offer complete independence or a republic within the Commonwealth, and it did not propose partition into two.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Complete independence was not offered.
  • (b) Partition into two was not proposed as such.
  • (c) A republic within the Commonwealth was not offered.
  • (d) Right: Dominion status after the war was offered.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
