Question 85: Geography

Recently, linking of which of the following rivers was undertaken?

aCauvery and Tungabhadra
bGodavari and Krishna
cMahanadi and Sone
dNarmada and Tapti

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).

The Godavari and Krishna were linked in 2015 through the Pattiseema lift irrigation scheme in Andhra Pradesh, which lifts Godavari water into the Polavaram right canal that carries it to the Krishna. No link was undertaken for the other pairs of rivers listed at that time, so Godavari-Krishna is the only one of the four that was actually carried out.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) The Cauvery and Tungabhadra were not linked.
  • (b) Right: the Godavari and Krishna were linked through Pattiseema.
  • (c) The Mahanadi and Sone were not linked.
  • (d) The Narmada and Tapti were not linked.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
