In the context of the history of India, consider the following pairs :

TermDescription
1.EripattiLand, revenue from which was set apart for the maintenance of the village tank
2.TaniyursVillages donated to a single Brahmin or a group of Brahmins
3.GhatikasColleges generally attached to the temples

Which of the pairs given above is/are correctly matched?

a1 and 2
b3 only
c2 and 3
d1 and 3

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).

Eripatti was land whose revenue was set aside for maintaining the village tank (eri), a Chola-period term. Ghatikas were colleges of learning, often attached to temples, in early medieval south India. Pair 2 is wrong: villages donated to Brahmins were called brahmadeya, not taniyur. So pairs 1 and 3 are correct.

  • 1. Eripatti was land revenue set apart for the upkeep of the village tank.
  • 2. Brahmin village grants were brahmadeya, not taniyur.
  • 3. Ghatikas were colleges generally attached to temples.
Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Pair 2 is wrongly matched.
  • (b) Pair 1, Eripatti, is also correct.
  • (c) Pair 2 is wrongly matched, and pair 1 is omitted.
  • (d) Right: pairs 1 and 3 are correct.
