Question 74: Geography
In which of the following regions of India are shale gas resources found?
- 1.Cambay Basin
- 2.Cauvery Basin
- 3.Krishna-Godavari Basin
Select the correct answer using the code given below.
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).
India's shale gas potential lies in several sedimentary basins. The main ones assessed include Cambay in Gujarat, Cauvery and Krishna-Godavari, along with the Assam-Arakan and Gondwana basins. So all three basins listed in the question are correct. Shale gas is natural gas trapped in fine-grained shale rock and extracted by hydraulic fracturing.
- 1. Cambay is one of the assessed shale gas basins.
- 2. Cauvery is one of the assessed shale gas basins.
- 3. Krishna-Godavari is one of the assessed shale gas basins.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (b) and (c) go: each of them leaves 1 out.
What you needed to know: Cambay is one of the assessed shale gas basins.
- Then, if you were sure statement 3 is correct, (a) goes: it leaves 3 out.
What you needed to know: Krishna-Godavari is one of the assessed shale gas basins.
Only (d) is left. You didn’t need statement 2.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) The Krishna-Godavari Basin also has shale gas resources.
- (b) Cambay and Cauvery also have shale gas resources.
- (c) The Cambay Basin also has shale gas resources.
- (d) Right: all three basins have shale gas resources.
