Question 54: Environment and Ecology

Which of the following statements is/are correct? Proper design and effective implementation of UN-REDD+ Programme can significantly contribute to

  1. 1.protection of biodiversity
  2. 2.resilience of forest ecosystems
  3. 3.poverty reduction

Select the correct answer using the code given below.

a1 and 2 only
b3 only
c2 and 3 only
d1, 2 and 3

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).

UN-REDD+ supports countries in reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, plus conservation, sustainable management and enhancement of forest carbon stocks. Properly designed and implemented, it also brings co-benefits: protection of biodiversity, greater resilience of forest ecosystems and poverty reduction for forest-dependent communities. All three statements are correct.

  • 1. Protecting forests also protects biodiversity.
  • 2. Well-managed forests are more resilient ecosystems.
  • 3. Benefits flowing to forest communities can reduce poverty.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (b) and (c) go: each of them leaves 1 out.

What you needed to know: Protecting forests also protects biodiversity.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 3 is correct, (a) goes: it leaves 3 out.

What you needed to know: Benefits flowing to forest communities can reduce poverty.

Only (d) is left. You didn’t need statement 2.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Poverty reduction is also a co-benefit.
  • (b) Biodiversity and resilience are also co-benefits.
  • (c) Biodiversity protection is also a co-benefit.
  • (d) Right: all three are potential benefits.
