UPSC Prelims 2016 · GS Paper I
Question 42: International Relations and Current Affairs
Consider the following statements : The India-Africa Summit
- 1.held in 2015 was the third such Summit
- 2.was actually initiated by Jawaharlal Nehru in 1951
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).
The India-Africa Forum Summit was first held in New Delhi in 2008, then in Addis Ababa in 2011, and the New Delhi summit of 2015 was the third. Nehru did not start these summits in 1951: India's ties with Africa are older, but the summit format dates only from 2008.
- 1. The summits were held in 2008, 2011 and 2015, making 2015 the third.
- 2. The summit series began in 2008, not in 1951 under Nehru.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (b) and (d) go: each of them leaves 1 out.
What you needed to know: The summits were held in 2008, 2011 and 2015, making 2015 the third.
- Then, if you were sure statement 2 is not correct, (c) goes: it includes 2.
What you needed to know: The summit series began in 2008, not in 1951 under Nehru.
Only (a) is left. This one needs every statement.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Right: the 2015 summit was the third, but Nehru did not initiate it in 1951.
- (b) Statement 2 is false: the summits began in 2008.
- (c) Statement 2 is false, so 'both' fails.
- (d) Statement 1 is true, so 'neither' fails.
Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
