Question 36: Economy and Social Development

‘Net metering’ is sometimes seen in the news in the context of promoting the

aproduction and use of solar energy by the households/consumers
buse of piped natural gas in the kitchens of households
cinstallation of CNG kits in motor-cars
dinstallation of water meters in urban households

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).

Net metering lets a household or business with rooftop solar panels feed surplus electricity into the grid and be billed only for the net units, the electricity drawn from the grid minus the electricity it supplied. It therefore encourages the production and use of solar energy by consumers. It has nothing to do with piped natural gas, CNG kits or water meters.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Right: net metering promotes solar generation and use by consumers.
  • (b) Piped natural gas uses different metering, unrelated to this term.
  • (c) CNG kits are unrelated to net metering.
  • (d) Water meters are a different subject.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
