Question 73: Basic Numeracy

A cylindrical overhead tank of radius 2 m and height 7 m is to be filled from an underground tank of size 5.5 m × 4 m × 6 m. How much portion of the underground tank is still filled with water after filling the overhead tank completely ?

a1/3
b1/2
c1/4
d1/6

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).

Overhead tank volume = pi r^2 h = (22/7) x 2 x 2 x 7 = 88 m^3. The underground tank holds 5.5 x 4 x 6 = 132 m^3, taken as full at the start. After filling the overhead tank, 132 - 88 = 44 m^3 remains, and 44 / 132 = 1/3.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Right: 44 / 132 = 1/3.
  • (b) Half would leave 66 m^3.
  • (c) A quarter would leave 33 m^3.
  • (d) A sixth would leave 22 m^3.
