Question 54: Logical Reasoning and Mental Ability

Direction for the following 3 (three) items · as printed by UPSC
Passage beginning “When three friends A, B and…”

What is C's surname ?

aRibeiro
bKumar
cSingh
dCannot be determined

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).

Clue 2 gives the tie to C, leaving jacket and sweater for A and B. Read clue 1 as saying the sweater is white and that B and Ribeiro are different people. B does not wear the white sweater, so A does. A is not Ribeiro (clue 1) and not Singh (clue 3 bars Singh from white), so A is Kumar, which agrees with clue 4. B is not Ribeiro, so B is Singh and C is Ribeiro.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Right: A is Kumar and B is Singh, leaving C as Ribeiro.
  • (b) Kumar wears the white sweater, which is A's, so C is not Kumar.
  • (c) Singh must be B, who wears the jacket; C is not Singh.
  • (d) The clues do fix the arrangement once clue 1 is read as above.
