Question 52: Basic Numeracy
The total emoluments of two persons are the same, but one gets allowances to the extent of 65% of his basic pay and the other gets allowances to the extent of 80% of his basic pay. The ratio of the basic pay of the former to the basic pay of the latter is :
a16 : 13
b5 : 4
c7 : 5
d12 : 11
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).
Let the basic pays be b1 and b2. Total emoluments are equal: b1 x 1.65 = b2 x 1.80. So b1 : b2 = 1.80 : 1.65 = 180 : 165 = 12 : 11. Remember: when totals are equal, the ratio of the bases is the inverse of the ratio of the multipliers.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) 16 : 13 is not equal to 180 : 165.
- (b) 5 : 4 is not equal to 180 : 165.
- (c) 7 : 5 is not equal to 180 : 165.
- (d) Right: 180 : 165 reduces to 12 : 11.
