Question 45: Reading Comprehension

With reference to the above passage, consider the following statements :
- 1.Urban sanitation problems can be fully solved by the abolition of manual scavenging only
- 2.There is a need to promote greater awareness on safe sanitation practices in urban areas
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).
Statement 1 goes too far: the passage wants the campaign to focus mainly on ending manual scavenging, but it also speaks of promoting pour-flush toilets, ending dry latrines, bringing women into schemes and a wide campaign for the right to sanitation, so abolition alone is not said to fully solve urban sanitation. Statement 2 is valid: the call for a sustained, large-scale campaign implies promoting greater awareness of safe sanitation practices.
- 1. Ending manual scavenging is the main focus, but 'only' and 'fully' go beyond the passage.
- 2. A sustained large-scale campaign implies promoting awareness of safe sanitation.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a) and (c) go: each of them includes 1.
What you needed to know: Ending manual scavenging is the main focus, but 'only' and 'fully' go beyond the passage.
- Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (d) goes: it leaves 2 out.
What you needed to know: A sustained large-scale campaign implies promoting awareness of safe sanitation.
Only (b) is left. This one needs every statement.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) 'Only' and 'fully' overstate the role of ending manual scavenging.
- (b) Right: only statement 2 is supported.
- (c) Statement 1 is not supported.
- (d) Statement 2 is supported by the call for a sustained campaign.
Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
