Question 73: Geography

The term 'IndARC', sometimes seen in the news, is the name of

aan indigenously developed radar system inducted into Indian Defence
bIndia's satellite to provide services to the countries of Indian Ocean Rim
ca scientific establishment set up by India in Antarctic region
dIndia's underwater observatory to scientifically study the Arctic region

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).

IndARC is India's first underwater observatory in the Arctic. Deployed in July 2014 in Kongsfjorden, off Svalbard, near India's Himadri research station at Ny-Alesund, it studies the effect of Arctic climate on the Indian monsoon and carries sensors for temperature, salinity and currents. Remember: IndARC for the Arctic; Himadri is the Arctic station; Maitri and Bharati are in Antarctica.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) IndARC is not a radar system.
  • (b) It is not a satellite for Indian Ocean Rim countries.
  • (c) India's Antarctic establishments are Dakshin Gangotri, Maitri and Bharati, not IndARC.
  • (d) Correct: IndARC is an underwater observatory to study the Arctic.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
