Question 47: History and Culture
Who of the following founded a new city on the south bank of a tributary to river Krishna and undertook to rule his new kingdom as the agent of a deity to whom all the land south of the river Krishna was supposed to belong?
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).
Harihara I, together with his brother Bukka, founded the Vijayanagara kingdom in 1336 on the southern bank of the Tungabhadra, a tributary of the Krishna. They ruled as agents of the deity Virupaksha, to whom the land south of the river was believed to belong, and rulers signed as 'Shri Virupaksha'. Amoghavarsha I, Ballala II and Prataparudra II were from other dynasties.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Amoghavarsha I was a Rashtrakuta king who ruled much earlier.
- (b) Ballala II was a Hoysala king, not the founder of this city.
- (c) Correct: Harihara I founded Vijayanagara and ruled as Virupaksha's agent.
- (d) Prataparudra II was a Kakatiya king of Warangal.
