aIt is the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development
bIt is a Ministerial Meeting of the World Trade Organization
cIt is a Conference of the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change
dIt is a Conference of the Member Countries of the Convention on Biological Diversity

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).

Rio+20 was the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, held in Rio de Janeiro in June 2012, twenty years after the 1992 Earth Summit. Its outcome document, The Future We Want, pushed the idea of a green economy and began the process leading to the Sustainable Development Goals. Remember it as a UN conference, not a trade, climate-science or biodiversity meeting.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Correct: Rio+20 is the UN Conference on Sustainable Development.
  • (b) WTO ministerial meetings are not called Rio+20.
  • (c) The IPCC does not hold a Rio+20 conference.
  • (d) The CBD Conference of Parties is a separate meeting.
