Question 56: Logical Reasoning and Mental Ability

Consider the following statements :

  1. 1.Some claim to have seen UFOs (Unidentified Flying Objects).
  2. 2.Life on other heavenly bodies is considered to be a possibility.
  3. 3.Voyage to space is now an established fact.

From the above statements, it may be concluded that

aUFOs are heavenly bodies
bUFOs are sent from other heavenly bodies
cSome living species in other heavenly bodies are more intelligent than man
dNothing definite can be said about the UFOs

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).

The statements say only that some people claim sightings of UFOs, that life elsewhere is a possibility, and that space travel is established. None says what UFOs actually are, where they come from, or whether any beings are intelligent. So no definite conclusion about UFOs follows. Options (a) to (c) each add a claim that the statements never make. In conclusion questions, pick the option that stays within what is given.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong: nothing says what UFOs are, so they cannot be called heavenly bodies.
  • (b) Wrong: the statements do not say UFOs come from elsewhere.
  • (c) Wrong: nothing is said about the intelligence of other species.
  • (d) Right: the statements give no definite fact about UFOs.
