Question 32: Logical Reasoning and Mental Ability

Examine the following statements :

  1. 1.Lady’s finger is tastier than cabbage.
  2. 2.Cauliflower is tastier than lady’s finger.
  3. 3.Cabbage is not tastier than peas.

The conclusion that can be drawn from these statements is that

apeas are as tasty as lady’s finger.
bpeas are as tasty as cauliflower and lady’s finger.
ccabbage is the least tasty of the four vegetables.
dcauliflower is tastier than cabbage.

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).

Turn the statements into an order. From 1, lady's finger > cabbage. From 2, cauliflower > lady's finger. So cauliflower > lady's finger > cabbage, and therefore cauliflower is tastier than cabbage. Statement 3 only says cabbage is no tastier than peas, so peas are at least as tasty as cabbage; peas cannot be placed against the others.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong: peas are only known to be at least as tasty as cabbage, not equal to lady's finger.
  • (b) Wrong: the comparison of peas with cauliflower and lady's finger is not given.
  • (c) Wrong: peas may equal cabbage, so cabbage is not certainly the least tasty.
  • (d) Right: cauliflower > lady's finger > cabbage.
