Question 30: Basic Numeracy
Each of A, B, C and D has ₹ 100. A pays ₹ 20 to B, who pays ₹ 10 to C, who gets ₹ 30 from D. In this context, which one of the following statements is not correct ?
aC is the richest.
bD is the poorest.
cC has more than what A and D have together.
dB is richer than D.
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).
Track each person's money. A: 100 − 20 = 80. B: 100 + 20 − 10 = 110. C: 100 + 10 + 30 = 140. D: 100 − 30 = 70. So C is richest, D is poorest, and B (110) has more than D (70). C has 140, but A and D together have 80 + 70 = 150, which is more. So the statement that C has more than A and D together is not correct.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) True, so not the answer: C has 140, the highest.
- (b) True, so not the answer: D has 70, the lowest.
- (c) Right (the incorrect statement): A and D together have 150, more than C's 140.
- (d) True, so not the answer: B has 110 and D has 70.
