Question 17: Logical Reasoning and Mental Ability

Four persons A, B, C and D consisting of two married couples are in a group. Both the women are shorter than their respective husbands. A is the tallest among the four. C is taller than B. D is B’s brother. In this context, which one of the following statements is not correct ?

aAll four have family ties.
bB is the shortest among the four.
cC is taller than D.
dA is B’s husband.

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).

D is B's brother, so D is a man and B and D cannot be a couple. A is the tallest, so A cannot be a wife (she would be shorter than her husband); A is a man. His wife cannot be C, as that would leave B and D as a pair, so A is married to B and C is married to D. Wives are shorter than husbands, so D > C, and C > B is given. The order is A > D > C > B, so 'C is taller than D' is the incorrect statement.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) True, so not the answer: the couples are A-B and D-C, and B and D are siblings, so all four are related.
  • (b) True, so not the answer: the order from tallest is A, D, C, B, so B is shortest.
  • (c) Right (the incorrect statement): D is C's husband, so D is taller than C, not shorter.
  • (d) True, so not the answer: A is married to B.
