UPSC Prelims 2014 · GS Paper I
Question 90: History and Culture
Consider the following statements :
- 1.'Bijak' is a composition of the teachings of Saint Dadu Dayal.
- 2.The Philosophy of Pushti Marg was propounded by Madhvacharya.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).
The Bijak is the best-known collection of the sayings of Kabir, not of Dadu Dayal, who founded the Dadu Panth. The Pushti Marg, the path of grace, was propounded by Vallabhacharya in the sixteenth century, not by Madhvacharya, who founded the Dvaita school of Vedanta. Both statements are wrong.
- 1. Bijak is a collection of Kabir's teachings.
- 2. Pushti Marg was propounded by Vallabhacharya.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a) and (c) go: each of them includes 1.
What you needed to know: Bijak is a collection of Kabir's teachings.
- Then, if you were sure statement 2 is not correct, (b) goes: it includes 2.
What you needed to know: Pushti Marg was propounded by Vallabhacharya.
Only (d) is left. This one needs every statement.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong. Bijak is Kabir's work, not Dadu Dayal's.
- (b) Wrong. Pushti Marg was propounded by Vallabhacharya.
- (c) Wrong. Both statements are false.
- (d) Right. Neither statement is correct.
