Question 74: Science and Technology

Among the following organisms, which one does not belong to the class of other three?

aCrab
bMite
cScorpion
dSpider

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).

Mites, scorpions and spiders are arachnids: they have eight legs, two body regions and no antennae. A crab is a crustacean, with ten legs, antennae and gills, so it belongs to a different class. All four are arthropods, but the crab is the odd one out.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Right. A crab is a crustacean, while the others are arachnids.
  • (b) Wrong. Mites are arachnids.
  • (c) Wrong. Scorpions are arachnids.
  • (d) Wrong. Spiders are arachnids.
