Question 55: Polity and Governance

In the Constitution of India, promotion of international peace and security is included in the

aPreamble to the Constitution
bDirective Principles of State Policy
cFundamental Duties
dNinth Schedule

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).

Promotion of international peace and security is a Directive Principle of State Policy, under Article 51 in Part IV. It directs the State to promote international peace and security, maintain just and honourable relations between nations, respect international law and treaty obligations, and encourage settlement of disputes by arbitration. It is not in the Preamble, the Fundamental Duties or the Ninth Schedule.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong. The Preamble does not mention international peace.
  • (b) Right. Article 51 in the Directive Principles provides for it.
  • (c) Wrong. Fundamental Duties are obligations of citizens, not of the State.
  • (d) Wrong. The Ninth Schedule protects certain laws and has no such provision.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
