Question 45: Geography

Consider the following rivers :

  1. 1.Barak
  2. 2.Lohit
  3. 3.Subansiri

Which of the above flows/flow through Arunachal Pradesh?

a1 only
b2 and 3 only
c1 and 3 only
d1, 2 and 3

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).

Arunachal Pradesh is crossed by the Lohit and the Subansiri, both tributaries of the Brahmaputra. The Subansiri rises in Tibet and enters through Arunachal before reaching Assam, and the Lohit flows from Tibet through eastern Arunachal. The Barak rises in the hills of Manipur and flows through Manipur, Mizoram and Assam into Bangladesh, and does not touch Arunachal Pradesh.

  • 1. The Barak flows through Manipur, Mizoram and Assam, not Arunachal.
  • 2. The Lohit flows through eastern Arunachal Pradesh.
  • 3. The Subansiri flows through Arunachal Pradesh before Assam.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a), (c) and (d) go: each of them includes 1.

What you needed to know: The Barak flows through Manipur, Mizoram and Assam, not Arunachal.

Only (b) is left. You didn’t need statements 2 or 3.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong. The Barak does not flow through Arunachal Pradesh.
  • (b) Right. The Lohit and the Subansiri flow through Arunachal Pradesh.
  • (c) Wrong. The Barak does not flow through Arunachal Pradesh.
  • (d) Wrong. The Barak is not an Arunachal river.
