Question 34: International Relations and Current Affairs

Recently, a series of uprisings of people referred to as 'Arab Spring' originally started from

aEgypt
bLebanon
cSyria
dTunisia

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).

The Arab Spring began in Tunisia in December 2010, when the self-immolation of a street vendor, Mohamed Bouazizi, set off mass protests that forced President Ben Ali to flee in January 2011 (the Jasmine Revolution). The uprisings then spread to Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Syria and Bahrain. Egypt and Syria followed Tunisia; they did not start the wave.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong. Egypt's uprising began after Tunisia's.
  • (b) Wrong. Lebanon was not where the Arab Spring began.
  • (c) Wrong. Syria's uprising began in 2011, after Tunisia's.
  • (d) Right. The Arab Spring began in Tunisia.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
