Question 29: Economy and Social Development

The main objective of the 12th Five-Year Plan is

ainclusive growth and poverty reduction
binclusive and sustainable growth
csustainable and inclusive growth to reduce unemployment
dfaster, sustainable and more inclusive growth

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).

The Twelfth Five-Year Plan (2012 to 2017) was titled 'Faster, More Inclusive and Sustainable Growth'. That is the exact set of three objectives in its main objective, so the answer is the option that includes faster, sustainable and more inclusive growth. The Eleventh Plan had been 'Towards Faster and More Inclusive Growth'. Remember: the Twelfth Plan added sustainability to the Eleventh Plan's theme.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong. It omits faster and sustainable growth from the Plan's objective.
  • (b) Wrong. It leaves out faster growth.
  • (c) Wrong. Unemployment reduction is not the stated objective.
  • (d) Right. Faster, sustainable and more inclusive growth is the stated objective.

Worth knowing: The Planning Commission was replaced by NITI Aayog in 2015 and the Twelfth was the last Five-Year Plan, so such a question would not arise today.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
