Question 26: Environment and Ecology

Every year, a monthlong ecologically important campaign/festival is held during which certain communities/tribes plant saplings of fruit-bearing trees. Which of the following are such communities/tribes?

aBhutia and Lepcha
bGond and Korku
cIrula and Toda
dSahariya and Agariya

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).

UPSC's answer is the Gond and Korku, tribal communities of central India who take part in a monthlong campaign of planting fruit-bearing saplings. The other pairs do not fit: Bhutia and Lepcha are communities of Sikkim and the eastern Himalayas, and Irula and Toda are communities of Tamil Nadu and the Nilgiris. This is a recall question, so remember the campaign as a central Indian tribal one.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong. Bhutia and Lepcha are Sikkim and eastern Himalayan communities.
  • (b) Right. This is UPSC's answer: the Gond and Korku of central India.
  • (c) Wrong. Irula and Toda are Tamil Nadu and Nilgiri communities.
  • (d) Wrong. Sahariya and Agariya are not the communities of this campaign.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
