Question 77: Basic Numeracy

For a charity show, the total tickets sold were 420. Half of these tickets were sold at the rate of ₹ 5 each, one-third at the rate of ₹ 3 each and the rest for ₹ 2 each. What was the total amount received ?

a₹ 900
b₹ 1,540
c₹ 1,610
d₹ 2,000

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).

Half of 420 is 210 tickets at 5 rupees: 1,050 rupees. One third is 140 tickets at 3 rupees: 420 rupees. The rest is 420 - 210 - 140 = 70 tickets at 2 rupees: 140 rupees. Total = 1,050 + 420 + 140 = 1,610 rupees. Work out the third group by subtraction, not by guessing a fraction.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) 900 is less than the 1,050 from the 5-rupee tickets alone.
  • (b) 1,540 is 70 short of the true total.
  • (c) Right. 1,050 + 420 + 140 = 1,610.
  • (d) 2,000 is higher than the 1,610 the three groups bring.
