Question 48: Basic Numeracy

A and B decide to travel from place X to place Y by bus. A has ₹ 10 with him and he finds that it is 80% of the bus fare for two persons. B finds that he has ₹ 3 with him and hands it over to A. In this context, which one of the following statements is correct ?

aNow the money A has is just enough to buy two tickets.
bA still needs ₹ 2 for buying the tickets.
cAfter buying the two tickets A will be left with 50 paise.
dThe money A now has is still not sufficient to buy two tickets.

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).

A's 10 rupees is 80 percent of the fare for two, so the fare for two is 10 / 0.8 = 12.50 rupees. After B hands over 3 rupees, A has 13. That covers the 12.50 fare and leaves 0.50 rupees, which is 50 paise. In percent problems, divide the part by the percentage to find the whole.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) 13 rupees is 50 paise more than the fare, so it is not just enough.
  • (b) A needs no more money; 13 is more than 12.50.
  • (c) Right. 13 - 12.50 = 50 paise left.
  • (d) 13 rupees is enough to buy two tickets.
