Question 41: Data Interpretation
The following table gives population and total income of a city for four years :
| Year | 1992 | 1993 | 1994 | 1995 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Population in lakhs | 20 | 21 | 22 | 23 |
| Income in crores (₹) | 1010 | 1111 | 1225 | 1345 |
Which one of the following statements is correct in respect of the above data ?
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).
Check each statement against the figures. Population rises from 20 to 21 (5 percent), then from 21 to 22 (about 4.8 percent), so it is not always 5 or more. Income rises about 10 percent, 10.3 percent, then 9.8 percent, so the last year is under 10. Per capita income in rupees is income in crores divided by population in lakhs, times 100: 5,050; 5,290; 5,568; 5,848. It is always above 5,000 and highest in 1995.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Population grew by 5 percent in the first year but by under 5 percent in the second.
- (b) Income growth in the last year is about 9.8 percent, below 10.
- (c) Right. Per capita income runs from about 5,050 up to about 5,850.
- (d) Per capita income is highest in 1995, not 1994.
