Question 39: Logical Reasoning and Mental Ability

Examine the following figure :

Which one of the following figures has the above figure embedded in it ?

A small line figure shaped like a sigma or summation sign, and below it four line figures labelled (a), (b), (c) and (d), one of which has the sigma-like figure embedded in it. The options are pictures.
aFigure (a)
bFigure (b)
cFigure (c)
dFigure (d)

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).

UPSC's key is (c): the given shape appears within (c) as part of a larger drawing. In an embedded-figure question, trace the shape's top stroke, the slanting stroke down to a point on the right and the stroke back down to the left, and look for that whole outline inside each option, not just parts of it. The other three figures do not contain the whole outline.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) The strokes do not combine to give the shape at the same angles.
  • (b) The shape is not found intact among these crossing lines.
  • (c) Right. The shape is found within this larger drawing, with extra lines added.
  • (d) The shape is not found intact among this set of crossing strokes.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
